Health: Breast milk banks struggling to survive

Since the country's first breast milk bank was established in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, in 2013, 17 such centers have been set up across the country. The site in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, has received 260 liters of milk from more than 360 mothers since its establishment in 2015. The milk helped 700 infants including 400 premature babies. Although more mothers are willing to donate, many banks are still facing shortages.

Art: Jade seals from French collector to be auctioned

 

French industrialist Emile Guimet (1836-1918) was known for his collection of Chinese and Japanese works of art, which he used to establish the Guimet Museum. Now a state institution in Paris, the museum houses part of his collection of East Asian art. A pair of 19th-century jade seals from the collection will be auctioned in Hong Kong on June 2. They were once used by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) Emperor Daoguang, who reigned from 1821 to 1850.

Dong Xianchen, a farmer in Anyang, Henan province, has been turning heads with his unique form of transport. He spent 12 years building his 1.7-meter-long, 1.2-meter-tall, 100-kilogram iron horse with recycled material. From his carriage at the back, Dong can control the speed and direction of the horse by a system of levers and switches.

Haining, Zhejiang province, has won numerous awards for improving its countryside. In 2004, the city launched a renovation project, investing about 1.2 billion yuan ($174 million), and initially targeting 14 villages. The work has now been completed. Last year, about 2.7 million people visited the city, boosting the region's rural tourism and generating 400 million yuan in revenues.
