Fisherman handed lenient sentence

A man in Guangyuan, surnamed Jia, who was recently sentenced to five months in jail with a year reprieve for electrifying fish during a fishing ban, voluntarily purchased 30,000 young fish and released them into the wild on June 20. Jia, 52, was caught electrifying fish in a river in Jialingjiang on April 14, with police officers seizing a total of 71.64 kilograms of wild fish. The court said Jia received a lenient sentence for acknowledging that his initial behavior had damaged the environment, and showing willingness to correct his wrongdoing.

Walk to find Wi-Fi leaves boy lost

A 12-year-old boy was recently taken to a police substation in Suining after getting lost, having walked 20 kilometers from his grandfather's countryside residence in an attempt to return to his urban family home. He said he secretly left his grandfather's house because there was no Wi-Fi, he could not play electronic games and there were too many mosquitoes. His father said he had hoped that by spending time at his grandfather's house, the boy would learn more about nature and country living.

Surgery leaves woman 'uglier'

A woman in Nanjing, surnamed Jia, who was unsatisfied with the results of nine cosmetic surgeries, on which she spent more than 110,000 yuan ($16,160), was recently awarded 70,000 yuan in compensation. She took the hospital where she had the surgeries to court, saying the procedures had left her uglier than before. Jia, who had the surgeries between 2014 and 2016, said the hospital had committed fraud. Both sides reached an agreement on the compensation sum after mediation from the court.

Drug user makes false rape claims

A man in Nanjing, surnamed Li, who hallucinated after taking drugs, phoned the police and claimed he had raped his first girlfriend. But he was incoherent and inconsistent when questioned by police. After a thorough investigation, police ruled out the possibility of rape, saying the man had experienced hallucinations. Drugs and related equipment were seized from Li's home and he was given an administrative penalty.

Man suicidal over stock market loss

A man in Hangzhou threatened to commit suicide by jumping off a building after losing 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) on the stock market. Firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving reports that an intoxicated male was standing on top of a five-story building threatening to end his life. The man said that if his wife did not transfer 50 million yuan to him, he would jump off the building. Five firefighters were able to pull the man away from the edge of the building while he was distracted by their colleagues on the ground who were talking with him.

Woman 'too scared' to keep driving

A 30-year-old female driver was recently found parked facing the wrong way on the hard shoulder of an expressway in Hangzhou. The woman, who was driving from Hangzhou to Fuyang, said she was too scared to continue driving on the busy expressway after her car had spun out of control on the wet surface when she suddenly applied the brakes.

Senior citizen seeks free ride home

A woman, surnamed Pang, had to call police for help when a senior citizen she was giving a lift home refused to exit her vehicle in the city's Shapingba district on June 20. The man, surnamed Zheng, stopped Pang's car and asked her to drive him home because he was lost. But when the man could not show her his identity card or tell her where he wanted to go, she asked him to exit the vehicle. A police investigation found that Zheng, 80, had forgotten to take his wallet out with him and was seeking a free ride home, but had forgotten his address.
