Stop pouring oil on the Syrian fire

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-08-30 22:47

Only the findings of the UN investigation team, not opinions or rash judgments, matter when it comes to finding out about the use of chemical weapons in Syria, said an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).

Some Western media and governments have rushed to judgment on this issue. This is a situation not unlike the days leading up to the Iraq invasion 10 years ago.

The situation in Syria is complicated.

The UN investigation team's work in Syria should be not affected or influenced by the other parties.

Only the findings of a fair and independent investigation will be reliable evidence for decision-makers of the United Nations.

The White House said the US is ready to take action in Syria.

Opinion polls in the US show a firm majority against intervention.

The "slang" of war is again being spoken; the Kosovo model, the Libya model, buffer zones, no-fly zones.

The West should stop pouring oil on fire and contribute to the UN's efforts to seek a diplomatic settlement.
