Zhongfen village in East China's Anhui province was in the past often referred to as an "empty nest" as many of its younger residents left to work in cities, so that it was mainly populated by elderly residents and children. However, changes gradually took place in the village – which is surrounded by mountains - and Zhongfen is now attracting young people who are returning to their roots. The following photos reflect the changes and also raise questions about the future of the village.

This photo taken in 2004 shows Xu Xiaodi – then aged 67 - posing for a photo with his granddaughter as other children play in the yard of his home in the village of Zhongfen in East China's Anhui province. Most of the local young people left the village to work in the cities, leaving a population of elderly and children. [Photo/qq.com]
