Czechs give Germany scare in Euro opener(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-09-04 06:35 MADRID - Czech Republic almost caused an upset on Monday, taking 2005 silver medallists Germany to extra time before succumbing 83-78 on the opening day of the European championship.
Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki led the fightback with 35 points and 11 rebounds after Germany trailed the Group C underdogs through the first two quarters. In Group A, Russia led throughout to overcome Serbia 73-65 with Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko pulling down 12 rebounds and notching 24 points. Latvia got off to a winning start by beating Croatia 85-77 in Group B while France saw off Poland 74-66 in Group D. Later on Monday, world champions and hosts Spain take on Portugal in Group B and holders Greece face Israel in Group A. The top three sides from the four sections progress to a second stage comprising two groups of six. |
