The newspaper reported Monday that McGrady, even though listed as "day to day" by the club, said doctors told him after an exam last week that he will be sidelined as much as three weeks by what he termed a deep bone buise.

McGrady missed games last week against Memphis and Toronto and Monday against Golden State and doubts he will see action at league leader Boston or Orlando this week.

"I'm the same," McGrady said. "I don't have a timetable. I can't do anything about it. It's not tendinitis. It's a deep bone bruise. I'm just doing therapy every day. I lost the strength in my leg."

McGrady has started and finished only one of Houston's past five games.

"He is making good progress," Rockets trainer Keith Jones told the newspaper. "He has got the pain out. He's gotten stronger. We'll just take it day to day."

McGrady could also miss games at home Saturday to New York, at Washington and New York next week and at home to Minnesota on January 11 and two days later against New Orleans.

Chinese star center Yao Ming has stepped up in McGrady's absence, sparking Houston to a 103-83 triumph at Memphis and a 91-79 home triumph over Toronto.
