RIO DE JANEIRO - About 26,000 armed personnel will be deployed to ensure public safety during the World Cup final at Rio's Maracana stadium on Sunday.

The number includes police, military troops and private security guards, the Brazilian government said in a statement on Thursday night.

The announcement follows a meeting between government officials and representatives from football governing body FIFA.

"We will maintain the standard of excellence for public safety that we have had since the beginning of the World Cup," Brazil's justice minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo said.

Brazil has deployed some 100,000 police and 50,000 military troops during the World Cup.

The government says it has invested 800 million US dollars to ensure public safety during the event.

The World Cup final between Argentina and Germany will kickoff at 5pm Sunday, local time.
