The Reds' heart

Steven Gerrard is one of the few players who have made their entire career a commitment to one team.

In the 16 years since he made his Liverpool debut as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers on November 29, 1998, the Reds' captain has become a legend among fans.

The iconic midfielder has won a Champions League title, three League Cups and two FA Cups during his 686 appearances for the team.

Gerrard reached a career high in the 2005 Champions League final when Liverpool came back from a three-goal deficit to take down AC Milan and win the trophy in a shoot-out in Istanbul.

The triumph, known as the Miracle of Istanbul, is still seen as inspiration. Gerrard scored the first of the three equalizers and lifted the trophy as captain, consolidating his place as the soul of the team.

Gerrard, 34, has been increasingly criticized. In fact, head coach Brendan Rogers dropped him from the starting line-up on Saturday, his 16th anniversary, when Liverpool hosted Stoke City at Anfield.

Gerrard retired from the England national team after the Brazil World Cup.

The veteran's future with the club now looks uncertain, but as the team song goes, he will never walk alone.
