China wins men's vault at Gwangju Universiade

GWANGJU, South Korea - China won its first and also last gymnastics gold medal at the Gwangju Universiade as Cen Yu took the men's vault title here on Tuesday.

Cen, of Beijing Sports University, who led the vault qualification with 15.425 points, dominated the final with two jumps of 15.333 and 15.433 points respectively to win the gold.

However, it also became the lone medal for China in artistic gymnastics as Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine scored 15.083 to edge China's Huang Xi by 0.05 points for the bronze.

Verniaiev later won the parallel bars with 16 points sharp. He also reigned the men's individual all around with 92.075, nearly three points better than his closest rival, Japan's Shogo Nonomura. Jay Simm Kelly of Britain topped the women's individual all around.

Nonomura's teammate Naoto Hayasaka finished atop in the men's floor exercise with 15.666 points.

Donothan Bailey of the United States won th men's pommel horse while Artur Tovmasyan from Armenia took the men's rings, the men's horizontal bar title went to Germany's Fabian Hambuechen.

Russia swept three gold medals in women's vault, uneven bars and floor exercise through Maria Paseka, Ekaterina Kramarenko and Polina Fedorova respectively. Japan's Yu Minobe won the beam.

Russia also won the women's team final, followed by Japan and South Korea. For the men's team final, Japan, South Korea and Ukraine occupied the top three positions.
