Destruction of graffiti sparks debate

The destruction of graffiti on the walls of an abandoned community in Shanghai has sparked debate recently, Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Authorities said the drawings were destroyed due to safety concerns after the community, which is undergoing demolition, attracted many visitors.

The 10-plus doodles were produced on the walls of the deserted community in the city's central Jing'an district and immediately became popular among locals. Some even had their wedding photos taken with the graffiti as a background.

But Dai Jianguo, a professor with Shanghai Normal University, said people made the drawings to show their affection for old houses and he suggested the local government find a better way to allow people to express such feelings.
