JAKARTA -- About 23,000 Indonesian workers would face layoffs this month due to the fallout of the global recession, Manpower Minister Erman Suparno said here Tuesday.

The minister said that the layoffs may rise next year because of the deepening impact of the recession.

Most of the workers to loss job this month worked at manufacturing and electronics sectors, said Suparno.

"It has been proposed over 23,000 workers for layoffs," he said.

The minister said that 17,000 workers had lost their works recently following the crisis.

To decline the layoffs, the government provided incentives to companies severely hit by the crisis, said Suparno.

The global recession has also threatened hundreds thousands of Indonesian workers working overseas to lose jobs.
