Stampede kills at least 36, injures 70 in Mali

BAMAKO - At least 36 people were killed and 70 others injured on Monday night in a stampede in a stadium in Mali's capital Bamako, media reports said.

The accident occurred at the 25,000-seat Modibo Keita stadium when the crowd wanted to touch a renowned imam who had finished delivering his sermon and was proceeding to give a benediction.

Many of those injured were transported to hospitals in Bamako.
