Jointly sponsored by Pondok Kasih welfare organization and B Channel Television, the event saw close to 4,500 couples legalizing their marriages. JAKARTA - Indonesia broke the world record on mass wedding when 4,501 couples got married at the Sports Palace of Senayan in the capital city of Jakarta, local media reported on Tuesday.

The appreciation was awarded by the British-based Royal World Record.

"This is the biggest in the world. We are very happy that a multi-religion country is in harmony at a celebration. Peace and love could be developed in a state's life and this could be an example for other countries," said Guardian of Royal World Record, Ron Muller in his welcoming speech.

Speaker of the Regional Representative Council Irman Gusman as a representation of the event said that the appreciation is such of pride for Indonesia.

The couples joining the mass wedding came from various ethnics and religion. The youngest couple was aged 16, while 86 was the oldest ones.
