Train derails in Sweden, 11 injured

STOCKHOLM - Four back carriages of a six-carriage night train departing from Stockholm derailed on Monday after leaving a station near Sundsvall, located in north-eastern Sweden, with 11 people reported injured.

There were totally 132 passengers on the train, of which some 40 people were in the derailed carriages and two of the four carriages were completely off track, reported the Sweidsh Television SVT.

"We don't know yet if there are any injured but all the derailed carriages were standing up and two of the carriages are leaning against a catenary pole," Dan Olofsson, press officer of SJ railway company was quoted as saying by the local media.

"We were sleeping when the train started to bump and we heard a loud noise. After that the train ran into the wall and it became completely silent," said Johanna Karlsson, passenger on the train.

The 40 passengers had already been evacuated from the carriages and ten people slightly injured were transferred to health clinic while one was transferred to local hospital.

According to the Swedish Transport Administration this part of railway would be closed until Wednesday as it would take a few days to repair the destroyed track.
