Over 400 Chinese evacuees reach Tunisia from Libya

Xinhua | Updated: 2014-08-02 15:34

RAS JADIR, Tunisia - More than 400 Chinese nationals evacuating from Libya's warring capital Tripoli entered Tunisia early Saturday.

The 411 Chinese workers, who left Tripoli in 11 buses on Friday morning and arrived at the Ras Jadir border crossing at dusk, have all gone through customs procedures and entered Tunisia, diplomats from Chinese embassies in Tunisia and Libya at the scene told Xinhua.

The Chinese evacuees are now traveling to the Tunisian capital, where they will be flown home.

Another 97 Chinese workers are expected to arrive at the Ras Jadir border crossing later Saturday, according to Chinese diplomats.

Citing the deteriorating security situation in Libya, China issued warnings to its nationals in the North African country on Monday, urging them to leave as soon as possible,

Clashes in Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi between rival militias have left at least 214 people dead and 981 others wounded since July 13. Many fear that the fierce fighting might turn into a full-fledged civil war.
