Egypt-brokered 72-hour Gaza ceasefire in sight

(Xinhua) Updated: 2014-08-11 00:37

CAIRO - Egypt got on Sunday approval of both the Palestinians and Israel for an extra 72-hour ceasefire in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, official MENA news agency reported.

"The ceasefire will be announced later on Sunday evening and the Israeli delegation will arrive in Cairo for talks within the coming few hours," MENA quoted an unnamed Palestinian official as saying.

The Palestinian official added that the start hour of the truce will be announced later in a statement.

After intensified talks with Palestinian and Israeli delegations in Cairo, Egypt managed to broker a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire between the two sides that resumed fighting after the truce expired on Friday morning.

The ongoing Israeli offensive on the restive Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, which is going on for over one month, has left more than 1, 900 Palestinians killed and about 10,000 wounded, while Hamas attacks killed 64 Israeli soldiers and three civilians.
