Turkey summons US envoy over spying report

(Xinhua) Updated: 2014-09-03 00:44

ANKARA - Turkey's foreign ministry on Monday summoned the US envoy in Ankara over a media report that the United States had spied on Turkey, local Daily News reported.

"For the reasons that the United States' name was mentioned, and such claims were made ... the charge d'affaires has been called to the foreign ministry and information has been received from him," Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told reporters on Monday.

Earlier in the day before departing to northern Cyprus, Newly-elected Turkish President Erdogan said he would discuss the issue with other world leaders at the NATO Summit and the UN General Assembly.

German magazine Der Spiegel said on its website on Sunday that the US National Security Agency and Britain's Government Communications Headquarters eavesdropping agency had conducted " wide-scale spying against Turkey," citing documents from former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

The report comes only weeks after the magazine claimed Germany' s Foreign Intelligence Service had been spying on Turkey for years.
