Loyalty, mission and responsibility: Jin Yinan
October 30 was the third day of Yanqi Lake Entrepreneur Forum 2019. Professor Jin Yinan from National Defense University of People's Liberation Army delivered a speech themed "Required Qualities of Leaders in the New Era".
What is leadership? Professor Jin believes that leadership means leading, guiding, organizing, commanding, coordinating and controlling all the operations top-down in an organization with loyalty, honesty and responsibility as the prerequisites. The most obvious feature of leaders is the power they wield, so the biggest embodiment of leaders is power.
As for power, the ancient Greek tragedy poet Sophocles said, "The most difficult thing to perceive in the world is the human mind. The best way to truly understand a person is to put scepter in his hand and see how he exercises the power."
Professor Jin said it's hard for you to hide yourself when you have power. When you have no power, you can talk about your ambition, you can claim that you always maintain integrity and that you are a moral person. However, once you have power, Sophocles said, "The nature of human beings is fully manifested in power".
So why do we need loyalty, honesty and responsibility? In Professor Jin's view, it's not for the sake of making it better after we have done a good job, but for providing needed help to others in today's environment.
