Peking Opera company presents diverse programs in holiday
China National Peking Opera Company staged seven shows from Feb 10 to 15, celebrating Spring Festival, gathering veteran and young performers.
Since 2022, the company, which is dedicated to preserve and promote the 200-year-old art form, has been staged shows for audiences during the traditional Chinese festival.
One of the classic Peking Opera pieces, which fits the joyful atmosphere of the festival, was Prosperity Brought by the Dragon and the Phoenix. With a history of over 100 years, the piece opened the holiday season performances of China National Peking Opera Company on Feb 10.
On Feb 11, audience enjoyed classic tale, Romance of the Western Chamber. Written by Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) playwright Wang Shifu, it tells the story of a young scholar, Zhang Sheng, and Cui Yingying, daughter of a court minister, who fall in love after meeting by chance in a temple.
Yangsilang Visits His Mother, based on the popular Chinese folklore The Warriors of the Yang Family, was staged on Feb 12, delivering a message on family reunion.
The Jewelry Purse was interpreted by young performers on Feb 13.
On Feb 14, Uproar in Heaven, which tells the story of Sun Wukong, known as the Monkey King, attracted lots of children, with its dazzling martial arts movements.
The holiday season program was brought to an end with a gala on Feb 15, featuring both classic and contemporary Peking Opera works.
