A judicial platform generated by artificial intelligence has been registered at China's cyberspace department, aiming to help judges improve work efficiency and give people easier access to legal services, according to the country's top court.

The platform, along with its functions, was introduced by the People's Court Press on Friday at a news conference of the Supreme People's Court.

Highlighting the importance of technological application in judiciary, Yu Maoyu, editor-in-chief of the press, said that the platform is a national-level legal AI infrastructure built on massive, authoritative and high-quality judicial data.

So far, the platform has gathered 320 million pieces of legal data and materials, including legal documents, court rulings, cases and legal opinions, he said, adding that it has the abilities to understand legal terms, logical reasoning, search and generate content after training.

"These abilities as a judicial innovation will be conducive to improving work efficiency of judges, such as searching legal documents and selecting cases, as well as to meeting legal demand of the public and serving high-quality development," he said.

"Even though there are electronic devices to assist judges in their work, they still have to spend lots of time and energy looking up and reviewing legal materials and cases," said Zhang Chengbing, an official of the People's Court Press.

After the platform is applied to judicial work, "it will help judges quickly analyze and compare information from a large number of electronic files, grasp key points and extract outlines, so as to further improve the efficiency of case filing and reviewing," he said.

"To put it simply, the platform acts as a digital assistant of judges, providing them with quicker services of organizing, classifying and refining legal information," he added.

He said that after more training, the platform will also improve the quality of public legal services, meaning it will be able to understand people's non-professional queries on legal issues and provide them accurate answers.

In addition, it will offer opinions and suggestions on mediation and litigation for the public in accordance with their specific cases, so that they can access legal services and consultation more easily, he said.
