China appointed Chen Zhenggao as Party chief of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on Sunday, signaling the government’s resolve to tackle the housing problem, according to chinanews.com.

Chen previously served as deputy secretary of the Party Committee and mayor of Shenyang city, capital of Northeast China's Liaoning province, when Li Keqiang, who is now the Chinese premier, was the Party chief of the province. Chen is also a former governor of Liaoning.

Chinanews.com quoted Yuan Gangming, a researcher at the Center for China in the World Economy at Tsinghua University, as saying that Chen can better understand and carry out Li's policies concerning the real estate sector.

Zhao Luxing, a researcher in the policy research center of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, said that Chen has much experience in the transformation of shanty towns as Liaoning was the first province to achieve this goal, and this will enable him to manage such work around the country.

Zhao added that the government should solve the housing problem, especially for those who cannot afford the high prices.
