GUANGZHOU - Typhoon Nesat is forecast to enter the South China Sea on Tuesday, as Tropical Storm Haitang is expected to pass by the area on Monday, according to Chinese observatories.

The Guangdong Meteorological Observatory said that Nesat, which was upgraded to a typhoon on Sunday, will travel to waters east of the Philippines' island of Luzon Tuesday morning before moving northwestward to approach China.

Lin Liangxun, chief meteorologist with the observatory, said Nesat is likely to hit the western part of Guangdong or China's southernmost island province of Hainan, bringing strong winds and torrential rains.

Meanwhile, the observatory in Hainan observed Monday that Tropical Storm Haitang would miss Hainan, moving on course 100 km south of Sanya city Monday evening with a maximum wind velocity of 10 km per hour. It is expected to land in Vietnam Tuesday afternoon.

The observatories warned that the outer circulation of both of the tropical cyclones would contribute to strong winds to the coastal areas.

More than 27,000 fishing vessels in Hainan were anchored in harbor on Monday upon the weather alert.
