The police confirmed on Wednesday that an abducted pregnant girl who went viral online recently was from Vietnam.

The girl is 19 years old, according to Vietnamese authorities, rather than 12 years old, which she claimed.

The girl was taken to Henan province in 2014 by two Vietnamese traffickers. She was then introduced by a go-between to a 35-year-old man surnamed Liu in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, and lived with the man, according to the Xuzhou procuratorate.

The girl raised red flags when receiving a prenatal examination in a hospital on Oct 4 because she appeared much younger and could only understand very simple Chinese.

Both Liu and the go-between were detained. And the news about the abducted girl went viral on Chinese social media and angered many people.

An investigation is underway.
