By China Daily | China Daily | Updated: 2017-08-03 12:00

Plans have been unveiled for a 1,600-kilometer coast road in southern China linking 14 cities and 90 tourist attractions, Nanfang Daily reported on Wednesday.

Starting in Fujian province's Zhaoan county, the road will extend west and finish in Hepu county, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

Some 1,000 km will be newly constructed, while 600 kilometers will be upgraded from existing roads. Work on one-third of the road is likely to start in Guangdong province this year.

A slow traffic systems, with greenways and sightseeing lanes, will also be built in addition to the main route to benefit cyclists and tourists.

The road, part of Guangdong's 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), is expected to be world's longest coast road, overtaking California's Route 1 in the United States and Highway 1 in Australia.

It will take about seven days to drive the entire length, the report said.
