China has finished three great parties in the last two years to show the country's "ascension to the ranks of modern powers" commented an article in the Straits Times on May 1.

The "hat-trick" shows, which including the exhilarating Beijing Olympic Games, the awe-inspiring 60th National Day parade and the current Shanghai World Expo, would "serve as markers of history, convenient milestones which later generations would use to denote an era of Chinese prominence, strength and glory," said the article.

It compared China and Japan to illustrate that just like "the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1970 Osaka Expo signified the arrival of Japan as a post-war power, China's three parties "signpost its current place in the 21st-century world". The country is expected to replace Japan as the second-largest economy in the world this year.

China is "wowing foreigners" with the Expo again as though it is the only country in the world to have the "wherewithal, determination and political will to pull off such breathtaking feats", concluded the article.
