Alley Rewi, the New Zealand-born writer complimented Changting's landscape half a century ago, saying that the two most beautiful towns in China were Fenghuang, in Hunan province, and Changting, in Fujian province.
Changting was known as the "Three Reds", namely the "Hometown of the Red Army", "Red Earth", and the "Standing Red Flag". Changting was known as one of the 21 national sacred places of revolution in the nation. It was also the economic and cultural center of the central soviet area during the second civil revolution, known as the "Red Little Shanghai". It was the furthest starting point of the Long March from its destination. Changting was also one of the important places where Mao's thoughts originated.
Zhu De has commented on Changting as one of the important turning points for the Chinese revolution. Revolutionary leaders such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, and Liu Shaoqi have conducted great revolutions in Changting. Early leaders of the Party including Qu Qiubai and He Shuheng, representative of the first National People's Congress of the CPC, have sacrified themselves at Changting for the revolution.
Changting has more than 10 national red tourism must-sees, including the former site of the provincial soviet government, the former site of the provincial Party committee, Xin'geng Villa, Gospel Hospital and the Qu Qiubai Memorial.
