LONDON - The Olympic Torch has passed rigorous testing to ensure even the worst of Britain's weather will not be able to put it out, the Evening Standard newspaper said Wednesday.

Two prototypes withstood 50mph winds, extreme temperatures, driving rain and even hail in trials at BMW's research and innovation centre in Munich.

Harsh weather was simulated in a tunnel with a computer-controlled circulation system that allows experts to analyse the effects.

Britain's double Olympic gold medallist Daley Thompson joined the Standard to experience the wind tunnel testing by BMW, a London 2012 partner.

The torch was also taken to Mount Snowdon to be tested at altitude.

Designed by London-based Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the torch has 8,000 holes to represent each of its bearers.
