WASHINGTON - Chicago Bulls All-Star guard Derrick Rose underwent surgery on his right knee on Monday, when the Bulls announced the 25-year-old former MVP would miss the rest of the season because of the injury.

"Earlier this morning, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose underwent successful surgery to repair his previously torn medial meniscus in his right knee," said the new release.

"Rose is out for the remainder of the season."

Rose was injured during the Bulls' 98-95 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. He made 20 points before tearing his medial meniscus in the third quarter.

Dr Brian Cole, who helped repair the left knee for Rose, performed Monday's surgery.

Rose had be out for 18 month because of left knee injury until he restarted playing this season.

The 2010-2011 season MVP averaged 15.9 points and 4.3 assists for the Bulls in the 2013-2014 season.

Rose's college coach John Calipari supported Rose on tweeter.

"If there's anyone who can bounce back from this, it's @drose," posted Calipari.

"My message to Derrick would be to stay strong and stay focused. Love you, kid."
