To members of society:

Xi called on representatives from different sectors of Macao society to continue with firm support for the special administrative region's government and its chief executive in carrying out law-based governance.

He also encouraged them to improve connections between the SAR government and Macao citizens and continue to promote the region's prosperity, stability and harmony.

Xi hailed the proud achievements of Macao since its return to the motherland 20 years ago, saying that the city, despite its small land area, has become rich, vigorous, prosperous and beautiful. He added that the city owes its achievements to the wisdom and hard work of all its citizens.

He cited a letter he received from talented young people in Macao who were taking part in a field trip in Shanghai. They said they felt keenly from their experience that China's system is consistent with reality and in keeping with the times.

They also said that they were confident that they can successfully carry out, develop and refine the "one country, two systems" principle.

Xi said the young people showed the spirit of a confident and self-improving new generation of youth in Macao who loves the motherland and the city. He urged those at the meeting to continue to apply themselves to the region's development and promote further diversification of its economy.

He said it is also important to give play to the fine tradition of being inclusive and helping each other, promoting social harmony and stability and sharing both the historic responsibility of national rejuvenation and the pride of a strong and prosperous China.
