Japan's Takarazuka Revue to grace Beijing
Never heard of Japan's Takarazuka Revue? You're probably not the only one.
However, thanks to the upcoming 20th Meet in Beijing Arts Festival, the days of Takarazuka Revue as the country's best-kept secret to foreigners seem to be just numbered, as the troupe is to stage the classic, Sword and Love-Women in Love with Napoleon at the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center from Jan 10-12 in the Chinese capital.
Arguably the country's most popular theater company, Takarazuka Revue was established in 1914 and is famous for its all-female performers playing male roles.
The play recounts the story of Bonaparte's life from his campaign in Egypt to his exile on the island of Elba, and his relationships with Empress Josephine de Beauharnais and Polish countess Marie Walewska.
