Special relationship between ancient Huizhou’s merchants and craftspeople has left a stunning legacy of carved art. Along with stone and brick carvings, wood carving is part of what is known in China as the “three carvings”, and has been inseparable component of Huizhou’s buildings since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The different types of carving work in coordination, and are used in different parts of buildings, giving rise to the elegant, exquisite decor for which Huizhou buildings are known.
