NANCHANG - No casualties were reported in Ruichang city, Jiangxi Province, hit by a 4.6 magnitude earthquake that struck late Saturday night, local earthquake authorities said on Sunday.

The provincial earthquake authorities sent a work team to investigate the impact of the quake in Huangjin, Henglishan and Nanyang townships immediately after the tremor occurred and found no casualties. Only one uninhabited house collapsed in Nanyang town.

The quake jolted the border area between the city of Ruichang in Jiangxi province and the Yangxin County in Hubei province at 11:20 pm Beijing Time Saturday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter, with a depth of 17 km, was initially determined to be at 29.7 degrees north latitude and 115.4 degrees east longitude.

Xinhua reporters in Jiangxi provincial capital Nanchang, about 130 km southeast to the city of Ruichang, felt strong tremors on the seventh floor of their apartment building.

Residents in the city rushed onto the streets for fear of damages or injuries.

Twenty-three aftershocks, with the largest measuring 2.8 degrees, were recorded within two hours after the 4.6 quake, according to earthquake authorities.
