TAIPEI - A mainland tourist has died four days after a traffic accident on Taiwan's rugged east coast that injured 31, a local hospital confirmed Tuesday.

Gou Xiaorong, 76, from Guangdong province, died of intracranial hemorrhage, chest injuries and other severe wounds at around 8:27 am Tuesday, said a hospital spokesman who identified himself by his surname Hsu.

Gou stopped breathing shortly after the accident, which took place on February 17 in Hualien, but recovered signs of life after first aid. She had been in a coma since the incident.

Gou and her husband joined the same tourist group. He had been by her side since the accident.

Buddhist rituals were performed for Gou after her death, according to Hsu.

Gou's mainland tourist group was involved in a Peking opera exchange program and arrived in Taiwan on February 14. Her bus crashed into a wall and rolled at the 43 km point of the Taitung-Hualien coastal road when heading northward at 6:15 pm Friday.

Thirty-four people were onboard when the crash happened. They included 32 mainland tourists, a Taiwanese driver and a local tourist guide.

Local police investigation showed speeding was to blame for the accident.
