Retiree turns energy toward poor students

Over the past 23 years, Chen Zixu has raised 11 million yuan ($1.73 million) to subsidize 1,955 students from poverty-stricken families in Liling, Hunan province.
Chen, 87, a retired worker, was born in a village in Liling.
"I was eager to acquire more knowledge in my childhood to change my life," he said. "However, because of the heavy family burden, I had to drop out of school in the fifth grade of primary school and began to help my parents do farm work."
