Some staff members from local public security bureau visited Chen and said they would subsidize the 20 students.
"From then on, I had more confidence to help more children," he said. "To provide the donors with objective and truthful information, I insisted on visiting every student's home."
Over the years, he said, he has cycled countless kilometers across the city and wrote descriptions of 1,955 students in 66 notebooks.
